I have a MacBook Air through my position at Penn State. It's the perfect
computer for portable use such as taking to class, meetings, or working
lunches. The battery can last upwards of eight hours and the computer
operates on a flash drive rather than a moving parts hard drive. I'd
recommend one of those but they are a bit more costly. Seems to me that it
could be a great one for her but you can get more computing power for the
money in going with a MacBook.
