Doug, I agree, the finder in these Digi cameras is for pointing... not
focusing.

I do actually own a V1.0 of the 80-200 F2.8.....  Unfortunately it does not
have a tripod thread.....a BIG disadvantage when trying to use a
monopod.........

I will go look the 80-400 up.....whoops.... $1-2K.... Out of my league.....

Back to the original plan.... the old, MF,  300F2.8 Tamron.....  at least it
will be brighter.....

OTOH, I do have an AF Telextender made by Nikon  ( TC16A ???) that would
convert my lenses to AF in conjunction with my D1x... Any thoughts as to the
success of this combo with the MF 300 F2.8??????  ( combo would be a 480mm
F4.. nice to have the extra reach)

Will try tomorrow to see if it works....
