No, the docking station was the problem.  When it is connected to the
computer, the speakers in the computer don't work.  I have no idea why.
 When I tried external speakers, I had plugged those into the docking
station so they didn't work either.  I've just disconnected the docking
station and put everything that was plugged into it in a Belkin USB hub - I
have three of those connected in a daisy chain and they are all full now but
at least everything works!
