If the job of the firmware is to only pull data out, then they won't need
anything other than a fast IO bit processor :-)

To demonstrate some of stuff that a processor needs to do before the "RAW"
file comes out, google the web for unprocessed raw data from the Foevon
sensors. They are more extreme than the non-Foevon sensors, but you get the
ideas.

What Leica means is a technicality. I would interpret it as "we have the
best lens for the goals we want to achieve and we don't need no stinkin'
software to compensate for them, except for the cases where we need to
compensate for them."
