Richard,

The boy must have appeared in Guanxiu's dream along with Bakula; the Arhats 
are 
all painted from a dream in which they appeared and asked Guanxiu to paint 
them. 
  The boy is just visiting for a while?

Another Bakula http://thangkas.csd.net/bakula.html - his emblem is a 
mongoose, 
sometimes he is shown with a three-legged frog, sometimes a boy.  I read 
that, 
but I know at least 2/3 of it to be true.
