I think (hope!) that you are wrong. If it was not a RAID, then each of the
disks would be autonomous and you would not be able to upgrade the way that
you described earlier (by replacing one at a time and waiting 24 hours for
the rebuild).

Drobo is not really a raid, though, I don't think.
