I have been screwed in this way by both FexEx and UPS when receiving packages from the US or other places outside the EU. I now simply refuse to buy from a vendor who uses those methods. When buying from the US, I insist on USPS. I may end up paying VAT and customs, which is fine, but I will not get hit with a ridiculous 50 Euro or so "processing fee".
