Agree that the two are not comparable.
The Kindle is cheaper, lighter, has a longer lasting battery.
It allows one to read books.
Period.

iPad happens to read books (with the Kindle app if you wish) but is really a 
media consumption
and display device as well as an internet browser, etc.

I predict the Kindle will soon be free with a certain # of book purchases, 
then will die off and be replaced
by iPad clones that run Windows based OS and cost very little.
The world of electronic medical records is spurring tablet PC development as 
well..
