Funnily enough I have found backlighting to be the greatest advantage of 
electronic devices for reading on a plane.
The "reading light" is never correctly angled to shine on a book or other 
document whilst in a comfortable position for reading IME. A backlit display 
can be comfortably read in any position without even considering switching 
the bloody "reading light" on...
