That is the bottom line. output could be made from a T3 which were undistinguishable from an M6. An X1 is a fifth the size and weight of my D200. But the format is still the same. And with the format still the same the results can often be competitive. A G11 the camera is a third the size but the format is a tenth the size. This is not enviable engineering. So we don't go "gee wiz I couldn't afford a digital m so I got a G11." Its like saying "Gee wiz I couldn't afford a BMW so I got roller skates." -- Mark William Rabiner mark at rabinergroup.com > From: Rei Shinozuka <shino at panix.com> > Reply-To: Leica Users Group <lug at leica-users.org> > Date: Sat, 31 Jul 2010 14:02:43 -0400 > To: Leica Users Group <lug at leica-users.org> > Subject: Re: [Leica] Digital point and shoot > > i think mark reiterates a point that is often overlooked in the press, > which is that squares (square millimeters) matter. > > as an example, the DLUX4 is a neat little camera, with a wide and fast > lens, but for image quality, a beat-up DSLR like a canon 20D, 5 years > older and 2 megapixels fewer, is simply superior. and there's a world > of difference between the DLUX4 and the M9. > > it's a different paradigm than the analog days, where under the right > circumstances a point and shoot like a Contax T3 could give a Leica M6 a > run for the money and produce slides and negs hard to distinguish. > maybe u4/3 bridges that gap, i don't know, i haven't shot them. perhaps > the X1 will do the job. > > i don't think mark is so much a naysayer, as the voice in the wilderness > who points out that in the digital world today, there's a performance > gap between system cameras and P&Ss. he attributes much of this to > sensor size differences. i tend to agree with him. > > -rei > > > On 07/31/2010 11:57 AM, Nathan Wajsman wrote: >> You're getting rather tiresome, Mark. >> >> Nathan Wajsman >> Alicante, Spain >> http://www.frozenlight.eu >> http://www.greatpix.eu >> http://www.nathanfoto.com >> PICTURE OF THE WEEK: http://www.fotocycle.dk/paws >> Blog: http://www.fotocycle.dk/blog >> >> YNWA >> >> >> >> >> >> On Jul 31, 2010, at 8:42 AM, Mark Rabiner wrote: >> >> >>> A normal lens for a G11 would be a 9.5mm lens!!
