The NYTimes didn't declare it, the capital markets did.  AAPL is now the 
2nd largest company by market cap of any kind in the US after XOM.

In 2003 or so, my broker talked me into selling all my AAPLs for a tax 
loss at a pre-split adjusted price under $20 (split-adjusted $10).  Ouch.
