Greg,

If you are referring to the 28/2.8 Elmarit Asph, which was issued right 
after the M8, the lens is certainly up to Leica standards.  I have one and 
it has been a fantastic lens and build quality is excellent, imho.

The most recent 28/2.8 Elmar lens which I purchased new a couple of years 
back was in my mind a compromise. Built to a lesser standard then any other 
Leica lens I've owned.
