Interestingly for those on a budget, the old Tamron 300/2.8 SP LDIF adaptall 2 lens is not far off the 280/2.8 APO. I had all 3 for a while (bought the Tamron first, the the 2.8 and finally the 4) and there's not much between the Tamron and the older APO - tiny bit more colour fringing and that was about it!
