I thought I was going to see a picture of mouse footprints. :)

The optical mouse use a low powered laser/LED to detect movement. I suppose 
it could cause fading if the surface is light sensitive and the mouse is 
left in one place for a while. Some people still use a mouse pad with an 
optical mouse.
