The 0.85 finders WERE darker... but the .72 finders were much closer to the
M3,,,,,.. try adding a 1.25 VF magnifier to a .72 and you get about what you
get with a .85 VF.  You lose about a stop by my estimates.....

The M3 VF mechanism, as I understand it, was a totally different design and
it was intrinsically brighter....

OTOH, this is always reported by people that have had a new M3 and now have
a new M6 ( or whatever...) .. and no allowance was ever made for brain fade
nor for older eyes.
So the best we can now do is to compare the old M3 with a much newer
M6-7-8-9...

On a Leica note, Hugh's M3 certainly has a better, brighter, and easier to
focus finder than does my .85 M6.
