If stated simply as 'county of origin' then I agree. Optical and mechanical
design and manufacturing QC are what matter, not the culture or currency or
language of the people making them. One of the best 80-200mm f/4 zoom
lenses ever made was the Leica Vario-Elmar, made in Japan to Leica's specs
and with Leica's QC.

There's a reason many of us came to rely on the R system, and it's not
because of the language of the people making them. They produce the results
we want, results we weren't getting with other camera systems. All the
other camera systems are either made in Japan or made for Japanese companies
in lower-cost countries so when typing fingers are getting tired it's often
convenient to lump the other makers together as 'Japan'. It's not the
countries we're comparing, its the design, QC and target markets of the
products' manufacturers. It's unfortunate that the comparison can devolve
so easily into Japan vs. Germany, but at its root that's not what it is.
