In regards to reels, I use the plastic ones.

Getting the film on takes some practice.

To make it easier, trim the edges of the film you are putting in the 
reels. Trim them so that a small tri-angle falls off the film. You 
don't need to take much off. You also need to take the curl out of the 
film some so that it isn't so insistant on turning down. Both of these 
actions will help the film from catching along its path.

After a while you will want to clean the reels. Soak them in diluted 
bleach, rinse, wash with mild soap, and rinse, rinse, rinse.
