S.D.,

I agree, Chris's D200 was my backup, if I could pry it from her hands. ;-)
Fortunately I did not need it. I agree, brand has nothing to do with it.
If I had had my R8 with me I could have tried the DMR out when I got it in
Cologne, and then used it, but the weight was just too much for our travel
plans. We used our friends home in Hurt Germany as our base, and then
traveled through the other 9 countries with just a small bag each for
clothes, and camera bag with laptop. we surprised many hotel personnel with
our small bags, as most Americans, according to them had tons of luggage. A
great way to travel.

It has nothing to do with the camera model nor Brand... The camera could
"die" from: factory fault, theft, droppage, forgetfulness ( leaving it in a
Taxi), etc.
It is prudent to take a backup camera on any trip, especially one that might
be or is a once in a lifetime. Film or DIgital.

And as far as pros go, if you do not carry a backup, personally, I would
never hire you to do a job......you take too many chances.

I took my M8 to Europe for 3 months with no backup, worked perfectly.
(Actually the wife also brought her D200) ;-) 3 years now and zero
problems.

Secondarily... If your M8 Dies, what will you do to take pictures? By
taking your film camera, you have a backup.... and you COULD buy more film
of some type in an emergency,,,,,,,
