Hi Charlie,
my brother bought an Alfasud new. When we removed some trim to fit a stereo 
we saw that there was no sort of protection on any of the internal 
steelwork, no primer, no paint, no sealant. It was already quite rusty from 
new...
No wonder they did not last long.
