Frank,

The stress in the square corners would have been negligable in a
non-pressurized aircraft. The square ccorners were the place where it first
appeared.

A pressurized aircraft cabin is just that- a pressure vessel. The pressure
inside makes the cabin want to become a sphere. The metal distorts as
pressure is applied, and when released, or offset by a return to lower
altitudes where there is nopressure differental, it returns to its normal
shape. Each cycle brings on the inevitable.

Ah, but if we could only add just a bit of spandex to the alloy.
