Hi Larry,
If it'll make you feel any better let it be known you are not alone! :-( :-(
I just received my machine back after about a month of attemps at recovering
all the files. Not because I wasn't backing everything up, I thought it was
being automatically done each day without me needing to think about it. Well
that was what I was told about two years ago by the computer guy.... (now
not in the business) who sold the backup gear to me and set it up! SURPISE?
It had a couple of things he had backed - up showing me how it worked. Then
he left with the word, "OK now you don't have to think nor worry about
failures, your ass is covered!" Quote - unquote!

So like you, the bulk of my past few years of digital material is gone to
pixeland forever! :-( I did however have some of it loaded on CD's just
before as I was about to load to Lightroom.

Now everything is being backed-up as I write this in two locations!
It truly is an incredible feeling of disaster and loss when you are told...
"Sorry we got all we could!" But we shall prevail more the wiser and
watching and checking constantly!
