I'm not going to argue with you about Vuescan as being intuitive or not, but 
I've found it great for B&W film.  I don't like it very much for color scans 
and flip over to NikonScan for those, but for B&W it's great.  I also don't 
do much adjusting in the scanning software.  In fact, it sound like I do 
less than you since I don't even mess with the histogram...

Not saying I'm a master at it, but if you're interested in the process, I 
wrote it up a couple weeks ago.
