I think there would be issues with less than perfect alignment  
affecting sharpness, and the impact of additional pieces of glass in  
the optical path - with associated reflection problems etc. And then  
there's dust; it'd have to be very close to the sensor to be  
effective, and any dust spots would be very obvious.
