In conditions like that I'd put the camera in a zip lock bag
screw a filter over the lens (which will generally cut a hole in the  
bag)
unscrew the filter and remove the plastic circle
screw the filter back on and shoot away
with the camera in a rain coat

or pick up a Nikonos
