You can do exactly the same thing with layers, it just takes much 
longer ;-)  There are lots of tutorials on the web to show you how to 
use layers for HDR, and I've tried it, but Photomatix will do it all 
for you for a one time fee of $99.  I'd rather save the time and use 
somebody else's expertise!
