Had three cats (acquired for Ann's daughter at various times as she
grew up)
With each acquisition I said, "No."
Not that my desire or opinion mattered one iota; in the end.

Then came the two year old rescue - Frost
(for those that don't know - my 150 lb Great Pyrenees dog)
Ann and I agreed to share responsibility with Frost
But it ended up where Frost was with me 24/7
at the office, at meetings, where I went he went.
He was a delightful companion, yet we were chained together.
Just not ready for that commitment and sole responsibility, again.
I'm enjoying holding and focusing the camera without a leash on my
wrist.

Ann's daughter moved out at around 20 yrs old
Frost died about the same time Erin moved out.
Erin moved back in about 8 or 9 months ago
with the two cats she acquired while away.

The cats are just here.
And I don't clean the litter boxes.
;~)
