Subject: [Leica] OT advice re carry on bags for flights...

I always carry on (at least) 2 bags on board. Never had a problem. I  
mostly fly Air France. Lufthansa was fine with 3 bags on board.  
Usually I carry a backpack with all the camera stuff plus a case  
(same size as a pilot case) with computers, harddrives, books...)

I think it depends on the airline and the people at the counter.
