Bruce,

Is the lens also AFS or is it the 80-400mm non-AFS?

The only time I had a lens ring was when I dropped the AFS 17-35mm
(not VR). It only damaged the hood but it also gave out a very high
pitched sound when focusing. At the time I thought the ultra sonic
motor went lower in frequency into the audible range. After using the
lens a few times the sound went away (or my hearing got worse). Could
it be that? I own 6 VR lenses and while the older ones make a little
noise when settling, they don't ring.

Len
