I had never hear of it - but it makes sense to keep canvas perfectly 
flat ... wooden frames tend to move over time (particularly with 
humidity and changing temperatures), glass also does ( 'drips' in fact) 
but it takes centuries, cf Cathedral windows.
I'd be curious to know the final answer though, i.e. the main reason why.
