When I was a kid - 14 - my mom and dad did my brother and me one of the great favors of our lives and sent us to work for two summers on a ranch on the west slope of the Tetons in eastern Idaho. It was up before sun-up - 5AM - big ranch breakfast, then wrangling the horses, rigging fence, working the cow-calf units, digging potatoes, big ranch supper, then in our bunks by 8, dog-tired. Finished work Saturday lunch, then softball on a very rough field, grounders bouncing every which-way, and after early supper into town (Ashton) for cherry-cokes, a whack at the nickel slot machines and a film. At the end of the summer, Jack Young, proprietor, a direct descendant of the late great Brigham, took us on a two-week horseback pack trip through the Tetons and Yellowstone. They are my mountains, the most beautiful place I have seen in my life.
