[Leica] Petition for initiating M8 lens identification in firmware

Not necessarily. It could involve 2 menus - one to specify the focal length,
another to specify 'lux, 'cron etc.

Presumably the purpose of dialling this information in is to allow the
firmware to weave its magic, as it does when it reads the lens coding.
However, it leaves the possibility wide open of forgetting to dial in the
right details when you change the lens, so the firmware would apply the
wrong magic. The damage this could cause might well outweigh any advantages.
This possibility does not arise with lens coding.
