Personally I don't find the mitten option useful. The nature of my  
photography is that I have to be ready to use the camera all the time  
- if I have mittens on I'm not taking pictures. I need warmth with a  
high degree of dexterity.

Neoprene is not ideal, but with breathable areas the Barbour gloves  
work pretty well for me. Not in Arctic conditions though! Not that  
I've ever tried. -20C is the lowest I've known.
