Regarding Solms; the best thing is to spend at least a night in Wetzlar, (60 km from Frankfurt) hopefully with a rental car. A reasonable hotel is the Hotel Wetzlarer Hof. It is on a park, and in walking distance of the old town that has been largely restored. Solms is a small industrial village a few minutes outside of Wetzler. After you've finished the Leica tour, (which will take much longer to set up than to actually do,) there's little else to do in that town. Instead, leave the village, and instead of turning left to return to Wetzlar, turn right. Soon you'll leave the valley, and get into some hills, and off to the left will be a village with a storybook castle like none you'll often encounter in Central Germany. Braunfels is a furnished castle, and they even have a rude little cafe. It is the original castle of the counts of Solms dates back to 1250. It houses a wonderful collection of art. Well worth a visit.
