About 25 years ago, when I was drawing on mylar, I would use 5H as my 
main drafting lead, and 9H for guides. There were the N leads for 
mylar, but they were such awful things to work with that the regular, 
but extra hard leads worked better. Basically, going from vellum to 
mylar meant going an extra 3 grades harder.

I don't think I ever used more than one 9H lead. Hardly ever needed 
sharpening, never broke and never wore out. Only problem was that if 
oversharpened, or sharpened to a chisel point, you could cut the 
mylar.

A 4B would wipe off the mylar with one wipe, and leave only a very 
faint smudge.
