The instruction booklet, that comes with my Canon 400mm f4 DO IS USM  
lens, which was published in November 2006 states: "Set the  
stabilizer switch to OFF when you are taking pictures with a tripod"

DO is Canon's multilayer Diffractive Optical element. It is new  
technology which allows the lens to be much smaller and lighter then  
normal lenses. It is a super sharp lens which I only use handheld in  
the field. The downside is that it's expensive.
