I think your assessment of the technical problem is probably dead on. When
technology matches on relentlessly, we tend to think that technology or post
processing can fix anything. The fact of the matter is that there are sweet
spots; and moving away from the sweet spots mean more compromises. Thet
800mm (1200mm on the APS-C) seems to be a specialty lens in that sense.
Handle with extreme care rather than spray-gunning it on a chewing moose.
