that is the little girl's mother in the background...


this photo sort of sums it up...the child did well, after about 10  
days on ECMO...

when the use is ECMO is based on careful criteria, it works well in  
children...It is used for among other things, when a child has a heart  
or lung problem that is severe enough to end life, where support will  
allow enough time for recovery, allowing the child to come off ECMO,  
and then be able to survive with their own cardiac or pulmonary  
function having been adequately restored, in the interim...

that happened in this case...I believe it was severe adenovirus  
pneumonia, life threatening, untreatable, but self limited and of a  
short enough duration that permitted ECMO support to carry the patient  
thru the critical period,  and make the difference.


as you know Charlie, the fact that kids are resilient, and have other  
well functioning organ systems, allows recovery in this situation.
