That's part of the problem. Since I don't usually edit my images using
Lightroom, but Photoshop, I like to be able to find them according to
my system.

Lightroom has never given me the impression that you can trust it in
the way you recommend. I think it also goes down to the "day" when it
comes to images and it probably wouldn't work for me anyway since I
put in a lot of scans that don't have the embedded info LR probably
uses to confuse the user.
