Oh, I've understood you.

I just don't make mistakes and need to back up very often.

Once I get an image right, the way I want it, I print the file and
save the digital version so I can print again in the future. The only
changes I would ever need to do would be resizing and then sharpening
for a new print size. Photoshop's own file format handles that very
well.

I liked Lightzone because of the non-destructive handling of files.

Picasa does the same thing.

No big deal now-a-days.
