Ok, Nathan. I'm starting to realize why we have had different experiences.

It appears that you "import from a location and let them stay there".

I should probably start doing that. The reason I haven't is that I
have taken the opportunity to convert Nikon NEF raw files to the DNG
format for raw files. In that case, Lightroom has to move them.

It is when you do that, move them, and know exactly where you want to
move the DNG files to, that is when I run into cryptic specifications
for directory paths that can get messy.

Next time I'll start doing it the way it sounds like you do: import
them from their present location and bypass the conversion from NEF to
DNG. That way I can put them where I want them and just tell Lightroom
to leave them there.

If you convert to DNG, you have to move or copy something. Not the
original of course; it stays intact, but the copy.
