This all seems so obvious.
We have these instruments called cameras.
Folks have spent huge sums of money to develop optics for them.
The optics have been optimized to use for rendering best image
without filters.
Filters have been developed for specific rendering alterations
whether technical, scientific or aesthetic.
Choose and use filters accordingly.

Camera and lens protection falls into a different category.
When using instruments in adverse conditions it makes perfect sense
to think about and apply protection.
I don't want my lenses to be damaged by flying hot sparks, salt
water, fine dusts, ad nauseum.
When photographing in a cement plant I wrapped the camera in a
plastic bag and screwed a clear filter on the lens - sure - why not
take precautions.
When photographing my black smith clients at work I regularly place a
piece of lexan between me and the flying molten metal - the last
thing I want to do is stop shooting to weep.

Think. Choose. Shoot.

Fond regards,
George
