Jim Brick is our resident firearms whiz and his
comments would be welcome. (Jim and I first
crossed swords when he objected to a comment I
had made about my Argentine Mauser rifle with its
Kiev scope, an exchange he now claims to not recall.)

The Mob, as it is, uses .25 pistols to warn folks
to behave. Generally, you get shot in the back
of the head, as the skull is relatively thick
there and you only get a severe head-ache and a
lot of bleeding and you have to explain why you
got shot to the police. But you certainly can
get killed by such a gun if you are shot in the
front of the face or in the chest. In the
firearms community, .25 calibre pistols are still
known as "ladies' guns" from the prevelance of
their use by women who were encuraged to carry
them in their purses -- they might be a bit of a
problem to shoot but they have little recoil and will often deter an
attacker.

Mob hit-men who mean business use .22 long-rifle
match pistols. I do keep a Ruger in my bedroom
but, then, I have had only hostile relations with
the Mob. My wife came equipped with this one --
my only firearm is that 1909 Argentine Mauser.
