Jerry, in the case of the DMR, it was reported that no further sensors were
available from the manufacturer as production had ceased. It was
uneconomical to start a new production run for the small quantities that
Leica would require.
For the Olympus E400 model the sensor was evidently also made in limited
quantities and the camera availability was restricted in the major market
(USA). The successor camera has a different sensor. If you had unlimited
money, each sensor could doubtless be recreated. That does not mean that it
would make economic sense.
George is correct and refers to the number of standard currently available
and very expensive 22MP sensors from a limited number of manufacturers.
Given the cost of those items, it seems unlikely that Leica could afford the
investment for a completely new design in a camera likely to sell in smaller
quantities than the M8 (my opinion).

Cheers
Geoff

George,

Let it be known that I AM an engineer and not a pretender, but there
is no such thing as a 'limited number" of those chips available. If
there is a demand,
more chip-making machines will produce what camera makers will pay for.

Regardless.
Jerry
