In the first picture with the piece of art out of focus it's a nothing photograph because it's so far out of focus. It's just a big distraction making the eyes try to pull it into focus. It's actually a visual block making your eyes fight to get around a big blob on a stick! The over all composition when the art piece is in focus is excellent and the only way to shoot it. There isn't any reason to use a great depth of field using a small aperture. All that would do is create a great big pile of in focus confusion!
