We did something like that when we took down the two tall red oaks.   
We kept about half the wood and gave the rest of it away to friends.   
I spent one long Fall cutting it up into fireplace lengths with a  
chain saw and splitting it by hand for firewood.  Great exercise, but  
I have more than enough firewood now.

This tree was pretty rotten at least halfway up the trunk as you can  
see in the linked shot.  You could have gotten a few useful planks out  
of the upper half of trunk, but not a whole lot.
