In Rochester we were talking at length on the sofas in the lobby to a fella
who had fought at the Battle of Arnhem, an American and he was fascinating
us with all kinds of amazing tales of those days having to do with falling
asleep and freezing to death in your hole;
and shooting film.
I had heard relatively recently about how HCB did most of his definitive
work with ASA 40 films shooting at 5.6 and I wanted to know what speed films
he was shooting and everyone was shooting during WWII.
He could not remember.
Later my thought was the reason why he could not remember was he did not use
a meter. So was winging it. In the trenches.
He remembered everything else.
