I don't know if they're in-budget, but I remain convinced that Eizo (formerly, or sometimes, known as Nanao) monitors remain the best readily-available brand. The "Graphics Monitors" are the ones I wish I could afford: http://www.eizo.com/products/graphics/index.asp ...but nearly anything from the line is likely to please. http://www.eizo.com/index.asp There's nothing wrong with Apple monitors, either. They tend to be consistently good, and in nice packaging, although you do pay a small premium for that.
