Dito George,

The big question indeed is: is photography a tool to realize one's
vison or ideas (thus creating 'art'), or is the aim rather to push
forward the boundaries of photography itself.
I always considered it to be a tool*.
The difference between making and taking photographs.
I'm not sure if the first has to be called photo illustration, though.
It's just a logical evolution: things that were not possible just 10
years ago are today.
It's an enrichening phase IMO.
But both have something very defendeable, indeed.

And I truly enjoy this thread, too.

Philippe

* Hence the love for Leica: it is a very good tool. Not for
everything, but very close to that.
Technology is quickly taking away the advantages of such a tool,
though. Today, what comes out of a P&S combined with skilfully
applied PS is qualitatively very comparable with what comes out of a
Leica.
Very few 'cutting edge' work comes out of a Leica these days BTW:
Salgado did great things with an Oly P&S f.i.
It's the big price difference that inevitably leads to this.
But no camera has a better feel and ergonomy. It's the biggest
photographic treat one can offer himself.
Like paint brushes. You can paint with pork, but I still prefer sable...
