I fully agree in your conclusion about whats important for good pictures. 
Alas, to gabble and twaddle in forums and user groups, reason 4) becomes 
quite more importance :-) 

Another question: Have you considered shooting digital? There are a lot of 
reasons that speak for it. Less film/lab costs and faster picture output, 
for instance. Instead of an expensive digital rangefinder or dslr camera, 
there are more and more quite usable compact cameras. Leica D-Lux 3 or Ricoh 
GX100 to mention the more pocketable ones, or Leica V-Lux-1 (Panasonic Lumix 
LC-10) for the more dslr-sized compacts.
