Up the side street ("Short Ave.") on the right of the frame one block is a traffic light on the "new" Route 17, called the "Quickway," which is a divided expressway built in the '60s. The Quickway is scheduled to become Interstate 86 in the next few years, which means that the traffic light will have to be removed, and the pizza joint and gas station/convenience store at that corner, which are the only viable businesses in Parksville, will also disappear, no doubt. While I was making the picture, the owner of Big Willie's barbecue restaurant on the left in the picture came out to ask me what I was up to. He'd bought his business about three years ago and was losing his shirt. There's been talk of trying to rescue the region's economy by bringing in Indian-owned gambling casinos -- it's a hot topic.
